Once again, welcome to The Thinking Log, and thank you so much for subscribing. Many of you have subscribed faster than I could get set up! That’s great! Let me take a moment to make sure we’re all clear on how emails from The Thinking Log will work.
Since I plan on posting 3 to 5 times a week, I’m not going to send an email to alert you of every post. Instead, I will send a newsletter on Fridays that will serve as a '“round-up” of that week’s posts, including updates on the main sequence running at that time. I’ll also include news of upcoming events and appearances at the end of the round-up.
Of course, you can check the website any time to stay up to date with the latest posts.
Wait, what’s a “sequence”?
So glad you asked! A “Sequence” is my name for whatever main writing project is current on The Thinking Log. The first sequence is called Pillars of Salt and will begin running next week.
Sequences will not be the only content on the Log, but they are the main reason I’ve adapted this platform and they’re the primary reason to have a paid subscription. In addition to gaining access to full sequences, a subscription helps fund these projects. Paid subscriptions have already helped me license art for the Substack so things look prettier around here! Your $5 a month helps not only me, but a whole community of other artists as well.
Don’t worry, there will still be plenty of free content, including limited selections from the current sequence and the archives.

The Thinking Log
The debut, self-titled post gives readers a hint of what’s to come. A reflection on a place of personal importance, where I used to sit and write, a short hike through the woods behind my mother’s house. It’s since been destroyed.
How Did I Get Here?
Looking for a better explanation of why I’m writing The Thinking Log? Check this post out! A good overview of the styles and attitudes you’ll find here. There’s a little personal history of my professional trajectory as a writer as well.
Introducing “Pillars of Salt”
An introduction to the first sequence to debut on the Log.
Looking back, the past becomes fixed, something immovable that happened once and is over. What could set the past in motion again? Several deaths in the family occasion a return trip across the southwestern United States, eventually cutting through Tennessee and into Appalachia, headed home after more than a year’s absence...
Thank you all so much for your interest, support, and engagement! Please share the Log with any fellow travelers.
